Filling the Gap

Dawn Robertson, president of the Old Navy retail chain, a division of Gap Inc., is stepping down immediately. She will be temporarily replaced by Tom Wyatt, president of Gap’s Outlet division, while a search is conducted for a new president. Robertson joined the San Francisco company 16 months ago, hired by Gap head honcho Paul Pressler, who left the company early last year. Robertson had 30 years of retail experience when she moved from Australia, where she had been managing director of Myer’s, the Aussie equivalent of Macy’s, to work for Old Navy. She replaced Jenny Ming, Old Navy’s founder. Old Navy, the price-conscious store in Gap’s three-tiered retail concept, has seen better financial days. It has had a hard time keeping consumers interested in its merchandise. Same-store sales have hardly budged, showing a positive increase for only one month during the last three fiscal years.
