The edgy European label Skunkfunk has landed in Los Angeles as rep Sheri Calvert has opened the company’s first West Coast showroom at the California Market Center.

Skunkfunk is a unique line of sportswear for men and women that isn’t pure street or fashion, but a bit of both, said Calvert.

Everything is functional and comfortable. Eco-friendly materials including organic cotton, soy and bamboo-based fabrics are used and wholesale price points are moderate from $25 and up. The line was founded in 1996 by Mikel Feijoo Elzo in Bilbao, Spain, and features dresses, skirts, T-shirts and outerwear.

“It’s for someone looking for something different. The women’s clothes have lots of stretch. It all fits well. You can wear some of the garments in different ways [including reversible or detachable pieces].”

The current collection features an “urban nature” theme with stretch stripe dresses and thick hoodies, all in dark hues. Designs are inspired from cultures and fashion from around the world. The company has been known to collaborate with up-and-coming artists from throughout the globe. The brand is carried in more than 700 stores worldwide including Fred Segal and Metropark in California.

Calvert said the company plans to open stores in San Francisco and New York later this year followed up by a Los Angeles boutique next year. —Robert McAllister
