Mayor Villaraigosa Signs Clean-Trucks Measure

On June 26, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed into law the Clean Trucks Program, which was proposed to reduce the amount of pollution generated by diesel-burning trucks.

Under the $2 billion port proposal, about 16,000 polluting trucks will be replaced with cleaner models, Beginning Oct. 1., all pre-1989 trucks will be banned, and by 2012, all trucks going in and out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach must meet 2007 truck-emissions standards. A $20-per-20-foot container fee will fund the project.

In May, the Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference, which is part of the American Trucking Associations, announced plans to file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles opposing the Clean Trucks Program. —Alison A. Nieder
