L.A. Fashion Week Fall '08: Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad has yet to graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, but that hasn’t stopped the reality-television star of MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills” from plunging right into the fashion industry.

Since Conrad launched her eponymous line of Modal jersey tops and dresses last August, it has been sold at celebrity-savvy boutiques Intuition and Kitson in Los Angeles. The designer also launched an accessories collaboration with Linea Pelle leather goods.

For Conrad’s Fall 2008 collection, shown on March 11 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., she put a Parisian spin on draped jersey tops, pencil skirts and strapless dresses. Models donned a “Veronica Lake” beauty look and were styled with “French girly accessories” such as berets, gloves and bows.

With nary a pant in sight, except for leggings, the collection of loose jersey items, pouffy short skirts and 1940s glamour dresses were feminine and flirty in style. One black lace dress with a strapless sweetheart neckline and short, gathered-waist skirt was a modern update on the 1980s prom-dress silhouette. A black-and-white “Le Jardin” chrysanthemum print adorned a range of styles, from a loose kimono-sleeve knit dress to a woven stretch-sateen fitted dress.—Rhea Cortado
