The California Market Center’s contemporary offerings continue to grow as new tenants await its new fourth-floor contemporary expansion project, Area 4. Until then, tenants are filling up what’s available on the fifth floor. Among them is the young contemporary label Thursday Island, which just relocated from the Gerry Building, across the street.

Thursday Island, named after an island destination in Australia, is a growing women’s line from South Korea that features a diverse collection of more than 90 styles, wholesale priced from $30 to the low $100s.

Sales rep Linnie Huynh is managing the corporate showroom, which is the sales contact for all of North America. The physical Thursday Island is an off-the-beaten-path destination for the free-spirited. The clothing line is also intended for free spirits who like to travel to such destinations even if it’s vicariously, Huynh said. It’s casual but can be dressed up a bit.

Knits and wovens comprise the bulk of the company’s catalog. A new organic cotton line featuring handpainted designs is among the current top-sellers. City sweaters, Western shirts, and ’80s-inspired polos along with embroidered tops and skirts are part of the ranging collection.

“The bodies are familiar to the U.S. market, but the details are unique,” Huynh said.

“It’s easy to wear. Anyone who puts it on loves it. You get your money’s worth.” —Robert McAllister
