'Sex and the City' Purse Scores With Buyers

Beverly Hills accessories designer Timmy Woods is already reaping the benefits of the new “Sex and the City” movie, which opened in theaters May 30.

One of Woods’ signature wooden handbags, shaped in the image of the Eiffel Tower and embellished with more than 6,000 Swarovski crystals, has been prominently featured in publicity shots surrounding the long-awaited movie.

Having been featured in a number of television entertainment shows, including the “Today Show,” along with various lifestyle magazines, the bag, which is priced to retail at $450 without the crystals and $3,000 with them, has been a hit.

“We’ve been getting reorders on reorders. We’re fully booked through June 30,” said Sharon Koshet of Sharon Koshet Sales, which reps the line out of the California Market Center in Los Angeles.

Woods’ line isn’t the only one that will gain exposure during the film’s run. The lead character, portrayed by Sarah Jessica-Parker, has more than 80 wardrobe changes alone, featuring creations by Vera Wang, Vivienne Westwood, Dior and Oscar de la Renta.

Her supporting cast has another 200 wardrobe changes between them, engineered by Patricia Fields, the retailer and costume designer who styled the cast during the television run of the HBO series.

Retailers like Denise Snyder of Denver-based Mariel are hosting viewing parties to scope all the fashions in the film. —Robert McAllister
