Fair-Trade Store Opens for the Holidays

In the heart of the Los Angeles Fashion District, a pop-up store featuring only items made in fair-trade cooperatives or by local artisans will be offering holiday gifts.

The store is organized by the Garment Worker Center, a Los Angeles nonprofit center that strives to improve the working conditions of the region’s apparel and textile workers.

All products in the store will come from fair-trade cooperatives or businesses that guarantee a fair wage for their workers. Some items for sale include handmade silk purses from a women’s cooperative in Cambodia and wooden toys made in India. Many products will be made of sustainable materials, such as Sri Lankan stationery formed from elephant dung or bowls made of recycled paper.

The store will be at the Garment Worker Center, located at 1250 S. Los Angeles St. It opens at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 with a reception and will remain open through Dec. 11. Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. except on Dec. 7, when the store closes at 5 p.m., and onDec. 10, when doors shut at 2 p.m. —Deborah Belgum
