L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: The Jack Rabbit Collection

The Jack Rabbit Collection celebrated its Spring ’09 collection launch and the release of its new album with a party at Nettwerk LA. The event, held on Oct. 11, was sponsored by Paper magazine and Nettwerk Records and featured a performance by the Submarines. The compilation CD represented the indie hipster edge of the Jack Rabbit Spring collection.

Founder and designer Mollie Culligan said this was “the official coming-out party—our debutante ball.” The accessories line, which was featured in Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion in 2006 for its belts and jewelry collection, launched handbags just a couple seasons ago. Culligan said she thought it was time to hold a runway show and present the expanded collection.

While holding a show for accessories can be a challenge, Culligan found an innovative way to feature the collection on the runway. The designer customized Alternative Apparel white burnout tunics with boyshorts for the models to wear with her leather belts and handbags. The handbag collection juxtaposed two different themes. One group had a 1970s-chic aesthetic with modern detailing, and the other featured architectural shapes with gladiator-domed hardware and a sporty tough-girl attitude. Highlights of the collection included “The Atlantic” oversize framed satchel and the “Zinger” duffle with edgy, yet chic, zipper details. —N. Jayne Seward
