Seventh Wonderland: Fashion From Down Under

A tiny art deco bauble found among the warren of stands that made up a Paris flea market was the inspiration for a new swimwear line called Seventh Wonderland.

Australian designer Bonnie Coumbe and her partner, Carlos Aviles, were shopping in the mammoth market when they happened upon a diamond-shaped pendant with detailed resin inserts in triangular forms.

It became the basis for many of the prints and shapes that make up the Seventh Wonderland label, launched in late 2007 by the Australian couple, who live in Sydney.

“We are pushing it as a high-end label only for boutiques,” said Coumbe, who still designs for other companies in Australia. “It is going to be sitting on a rack next to other high-end dresses and jeans. The whole concept is you can wear it as clothing as well, like a body suit.”

Coumbe hand-draws all her fabric designs, which consist of an abundance of art deco–like geometric shapes printed on dark Italian microfiber fabrics. The suits have lots of detailing, such as pleated accents and beading. Predominant colors are purple, teal, copper, lavender and basic black. Half the collection consists of two-pieces that aren’t overly skimpy, and the other half is one-pieces. The swim line retails for $155 to $235.
