California Brands Recognized for Eco Practices

American Apparel, Levi Strauss & Co. and Patagonia were among the companies picking up Sustainability All-Star awards during the recent Tech Conference West, held in Orange County, Calif., and put on by Apparel Magazine.

Los Angeles manufacturer/retailer American Apparel was singled out for its use of organic cotton as well as for incorporating low-impact dyeing processes within its manufacturing operation. It also recycles fabric scraps and turns them into headbands and other accessories. The company uses solar power and installed motion sensors to minimize the use of electricity, and bicycles are available for employees to run errands.

Ventura, Calif.–based Patagonia was recognized for a number of programs, including its “Common Threads” consumer recycling program, in which its customers return certain apparel products that are recycled into new products. The company’s “Footprint Chronicles” trace carbon emissions of products throughout the supply chain so it can remedy any wasteful steps. Patagonia also uses organic cotton in many of its products.

Levi Strauss & Co. was recognized for its water-conservation efforts. The company recycles 80 percent of its water. Through various programs, it has also reduced water consumption by up to 30 percent. The San Francisco–based brand is part of the Better Cotton Initiative, aimed at improving cotton-harvesting techniques and reducing the use of water and pesticides during farming cotton.

Other winners include T.S. Designs of Burlington, N.C., noted for its use of eco-friendly inks, and Greensource, a Seattle company that has been able to bring organic and sustainable fibers down to the discount level. The company supplies retailers such as Sam’s Club, Fred Meyer and Gaiam. —Robert McAllister
