New York is an inspirational city that is a must for any young apparel designer from California. For us, it was not only an inspirational trip but a tribute to a friend who helped us in more ways than we have time to explain. We are Dustin and Dylan Odbert, two aspiring apparel entrepreneurs who own a surf/skate/lifestyle brand called ambsn. This is a photo essay of our first trip to New York.

Over the past two years we were lucky enough to have the friendship and guidance of apparel-industry giant Dick Baker. He recently passed away from a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. So we made the trip back East for the memorial to support his amazing family and friends who any designer would gladly give an arm and leg just for the chance to meet along with a bit of inspiration.

Being designers with a tight budget, we found that the ferry was the cheapest way for us to check out the Statue of Liberty.

Like I said, the people we have met through our time with Dick Baker are legends. This Southern gentleman is no exception. Mr. Stanley Tucker, ex-VP of Saks and Burberry London and our more-than-gracious host for the week in New York!

Our fearless tour guide and handbag designer extraordinaire, Leonard Bridges (far left), rallied the troops on our expedition through Brooklyn. We were lucky to have Leonard around. He had spent the entire week before mapping out all the essential stops while in Brooklyn. Thanks, Leonardo!

This was one of the many rad stores Leonard had scouted for us. Halcyon is located at 57 Pearl St. and has a serious collection of everything one-off, including vinyl, clothing and accessories.
