Haute Contour by Spanx

For nine years, Spanx’s modern version of the girdle in nylon/Lycra shapewear briefs has been a success in helping women look their best in that sleek party dress.

Although the Oprah Winfrey–approved body shapers excel in slimming and smoothing the midsection with no visible panty line, Spanx’s briefs and bodysuits, which look like nude biker shorts and dance leotards, have always lacked in aesthetics.

Spanx founder Sara Blakely’s new line, Haute Contour by Spanx, is out to change that.

“Spanx was born because I wanted to make shapewear comfortable,” said Blakely, who is headquartered in Atlanta. “Haute Contour was born because I wanted to make it beautiful.”

Blakely employs “materials not traditionally associated with shapewear” in Haute Contour’s camisoles and briefs. For example, there is “a shaping power lace that took us two years to develop and a power-mesh fabric that provides compression while staying breathable,” she said.

The styles look like pretty lingerie, such as a thong with a wide lace waistband and microfiber camisoles with shiny satin or lace trims. Haute Contour uses a “silky microfiber” and laser-cut hem on lace-trimmed briefs.

In March, Haute Contour launched at stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Barneys New York.

Retail price points range from $88 to $198.
