Active Ride to Close 10 Stores

As first reported in California Apparel News in January, the quickly growing Active Ride chain of surf/skate stores will close approximately 10 of its 24 locations by April 1. The Mira Loma, Calif.–based core retailer is reported to have already closed five California locations this month, including its Simi Valley, Westwood, Chula Vista and Shops at Las Americas in San Diego locations.

When reached for comment in January, Active President Shane Wallace acknowledged that the retailer had fallen on hard times but denied that he would be closing 10 stores. “We are definitely looking at every single lease at every single store,” Wallace said. “We are prepared to do what is necessary to survive this storm. Closing 10 stores won’t happen, but we may close stores.”

Wallace could not be reached for comment on this month’s store closings and how the closures will affect the company’s vendors.

In December, Active opened a flagship store at the recently debuted The Strand retail center in Huntington Beach, Calif.
