Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: Witches

Lauren Alexander and Gabby Applegate’s twin uniforms of jet-black hair, black-rimmed eyes and monochromatic black ensembles earned the best friends a nickname that became the basis of their new clothing line, Witches.

“We started going out every night of the week, and people started calling us ’the witches,’” Applegate said. “We look alike, we have the same [skeleton-key] tattoo, and we’re best friends.”

The two stretched their after-dark style into Witches, which debuted for Fall/Winter ’09 at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood on March 13. Alexander also designs the LnA line of knit tees and leggings. She ventured into the “complete-opposite spectrum” of LnA’s colorful basics and T-shirts for her collaboration with Applegate. Models cloaked in varying textures of velvet, silk, and sheer and dense black lace lounged on ornate chairs in vignettes decorated like rich vampire salons.

The designers dosed modern silhouettes with “Victorian, Goth and grunge” interpretation, such as a one-shoulder long gown with lace cutouts slashed across the front, a T-shirt-style dress rendered in sheer lace and bisected with a cross, and leggings with one lace leg and one leg in solid black. —Rhea Cortado
