More Hello Kitty Than You Can Shake a Hello Kitty Stick At
Models from the Hello Kitty fashion show play in the Hello Kitty house
If Hello Kitty didn’t hypnotize you with her cuteness like a Jedi mind trick, she would be quite the narcissistic little brat. Her face is on everything.
“Papa Sanrio, can I have a Hello Kitty house where I can watch cartoons on my Hello Kitty TV, while eating Hello Kitty candy on a Hello Kitty plate, while I’m sitting on my Hello Kitty bed with my Hello Kitty pillows?!”
The Three Apples exhibit makes such dreams come true. The exhibit at Royal/T in Culver City, Calif., celebrated Hello Kitty’s 35th anniversary by aggregating all things Hello Kitty under one roof from Oct. 24 through Nov. 15. (To see our "Cuteness Overload" coverage of the opening night, click here.) On Saturday, Nov. 14, worshippers of the Hello Kitty bible came in their best Lolita dresses to give her a royal send-off with a fashion show inspired by the red bow-wearing cartoon feline.
Some of the names of the designers are as ridiculously cute as their muse: clothing by CrazysporkIam; CANDYspooky; IAmChubbyBunny and accessories by Boring Sidney; Bubbles and Frown; and Twinkie-Chan.
The first time that I went to Royal/T to see the Hello Kitty exhibit during the opening weekend, the line was a block deep and a three-hour wait to enter. I spotted a beefy bro (wearing a Tap Out ultimate fighting T-shirt) gingerly carrying an oversized box of Hello Kitty something with his tattooed, ripped biceps, as if it were a birthday cake for his girlfriend, who was walking next to him. For more evidence of the bewitching cuteness of Hello Kitty that can penetrate the toughest façades with her pink light of happiness, here are some highlights of the fashion show.
Grand finale, it's Hello Kitty!
