Market Tuesday Seminar Focuses on Design Piracy

The California Fashion Association and the California Market Center presented “Design Piracy: A Reality Check,” a seminar focused on the proposed Design Piracy Prohibition Act, on April 21 in the CMC’s Annex. The seminar is part of the CMC’s weekly Market Tuesdays promotion, which encourages buyers to shop the building weekly for Immediate goods.

Ilse Metchek, executive director of the CFA, gave an overview of the proposed bill, which is being championed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America but is opposed by the CFA and other groups. Under the proposed bill, designers would be allowed to copyright their garments and sue copycat designers. The bill, which has lost momentum in the House and Senate, could be reinvigorated with the recent creation of a fashion-industry caucus on Capitol Hill, the Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus.
