Prada Opens South Coast Plaza Boutique

On May 4, iconic Italian fashion house Prada opens its 12th U.S. retail store, at the South Coast Plaza retail center in Costa Mesa, Calif. It will be open to private appointments on May 1.

The South Coast Plaza Prada will be the first one built in California since 2008. The fashion house has built 11 American stores in the past decade.

The 5,070-square-foot boutique will be located in the mall’s Jewel Court, on the second level in a space formerly occupied by a Burberry boutique. According to a Prada statement, the store will sell the fashion house’s ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, and some exclusive products for both men and women.

Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi designed the South Coast Plaza store. He also created the look for the fashion house’s boutique on Corso Venizia in Milan, which opened in 2009, and a pop-up Prada store in Paris, which closed earlier this year. Like these other Baciocchi stores, the South Coast Plaza store was constructed with a unique and architecturally distinctive look.

The entrances are framed by a luminous, polycarbonate curtain. A pastel, green canvas lines the walls of the store. The women’s area of the store contains furniture covered by ivory Saffiano leather and smoky mirrors. The furnishings for the men’s area feature rosewood and polished steel.

South Coast Plaza also is the address of a Miu Miu boutique, also owned by Prada. This store debuted in November 2009. Also opening soon in South Coast Plaza will be a Herve Leger boutique and lingerie store Intimacy, which debuts in May.—Andrew Asch
