'Fashion's Night Out' Takes Shape in L.A.

UPDATED—Mark your calendars. Fashion’s Night Out, the shopping event launched last year, is set for Sept. 10, and event details are pouring in.

Retailers will be holding events beginning at 6 p.m. and running through 10 p.m. (or, in some cases, later) around the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Cynthia Ruiz, commissioner of the city’s Board of Public Works—and the mayor’s fashion ambassador—will be on hand for a kickoff event at the Beverly Center. The event—which promises to include designers, celebrities, gift bags, promotions and fashion shows—begins at 5 p.m. (Red-carpet arrivals begin at 4 p.m.) Among the celebrities confirmed to attend are musician Will.i.am and skateboarder—and MTV star—Rob Dyrdek.

There will be an official Fashion’s Night Out after-party at two Los Angeles nightclubs, Industry and IVX.

In between, there will be events across the city, including parties and fashion shows on Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard, West Third Street, Abbot Kinney, downtown Los Angeles and Los Feliz.

Fashion’s Night Out launched last year in New York, spearheaded by Vogue magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Co. and the city of New York. Los Angeles retailers—unofficially—held events last year, but this year marks the city’s first official participation in the event, which was founded to celebrate fashion and support the fashion and retail industries.

Ruiz can be credited with bringing the event—officially—to Los Angeles. The city commissioner began working earlier this year with event organizers in New York to host an official event in Los Angeles.

“We’ve made a lot of progress,” said Ruiz, who said, so far, there are 285 stores participating. “We’ve been working our butts off!”

Like the New York event, Fashion’s Night Out was created to put the spotlight on local fashion brands, designers and retailers. “Fashion’s Night Out will showcase Los Angeles’ emerging fashion industry that is a crucial economic engine for our city, generating $5.7 billion in sales every year,” Villaraigosa said. “The event will also showcase the creative talent behind the 5,000 lines located here who are constantly inventing fresh, new ways to express the diversity and culture of our great city through their designs.”

Here are a few highlights:
