Band of Outsiders Channels the Great Outdoors

Classic outdoor themes are an ongoing trend in fashion, but to keep the look fresh - it’s all in the mix. Just ask Scott Sternberg, whose Fall 2010 Band of Outsiders collection was a mash up of inspiration channeled from REI, Joan Didion and Woody Allen circa 1972.

Sternberg presented the collection in an installation during New York Fashion Week at Milk Studios. Models were set against a Manhattan-themed backdrop with the city emerging from a snowstorm. “I had this idea of the city being struck by this huge snowstorm. As an L.A. boy that seemed very appealing to me,” Sternberg said. The theme couldn’t be more apropos after the city had just been doused with a blizzard. Undeniably cool, the presentation captured the city-meets-outdoors theme with a series of Wes Anderson vignettes.

Sternberg brought a touch of modernity to his hipster country-club set, merging new fabrics, silhouettes and a dose of apres-ski chic. There were plenty of tailored jackets, sophisticated suits, chunky knit sweat pants, techy outdoor jackets, slouchy sweaters and even fur-covered boots. “I like having something kind of sporty in there and mixing it with something really refined and tailored, which is what I’ve always done,” explained Sternberg. “That’s very modern, I think. That’s how people like to dress. Throwing these things together in a different way makes it feel a little individual."
