RILA Debuts Law Center for Retailers

Arlington, Va.–based trade group Retail Industry Leaders Association formed the Retail Litigation Center, a nonprofit legal think tank and pro bono law center for retailers.

One of the RLC’s main tasks will be participating in litigation deemed important to retailers. It will file friend-of-the-court briefs on cases concerning issues such as health care, data security and privacy issues, employment issues, and intellectual-property rights.

It also will produce an annual law convention, which will be called the Retail Law Conference. The first one will be held Nov. 8–10 in Clearwater, Fla.

While part of RILA, the RLC will be governed by its own board of directors. The chair is Janet Dhillon, general counsel for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. “We will all benefit tremendously from an organization dedicated to presenting the retail industry’s perspective on important legal matters,” Dhillon said. Also serving on the board will be the general counsels for major retailers Target Corp., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Dollar General Corp., Jo-Ann Stores Inc. and Michaels Stores Inc.

Retailers and law firms interested in working with the RLC are encouraged to contact RILA President Sandy Kennedy at (703) 841-2300 or at sandy.kennedy@rila.org.—Andrew Asch
