Skechers Getting Greener With Governor Arnold

It's no secret that California's politicians are encouraging more businesses to go green.

That may be one of the reasons that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on hand when Skechers USA broke ground on a huge new distribution center that should be up and running next year in the Moreno Valley, located east of Los Angeles. The 1.6 million-square-foot center is supposed to be the largest LEED-certified building in the United States. For those wondering what LEED is, it stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a host of standards for sustainable design, construction and operation of a building.

Skechers, the Manhattan Beach, Calif., company known for its Shape-up shoes with a curved heel that helps exercise those muscles on the back end, will be moving next year from five warehouses spread across Ontario, Calif., to the new facility, which will distribute shoes to stores in Canada and the United States.

At the March 12 ribbon cutting, Arnold noted that "this proves that what's good for the economy can be good for the environment, too."

Skechers is developing the distribution center as a joint venture with Highland Fairvew, a real estate development company.
