Shopping Gets Technical at The Wet Seal

I just returned from New York, attending a technology conference for apparel makers and retailers, and realized that brick-and-mortar shopping as we know it is getting very technical and very Web savvy.

Joining the world of technology is The Wet Seal, the Southern California retailer that caters to young fashionistas.

Starting today, customers in or near some 100 Wet Seal's emporiums, which include the Arden B. nameplate, can use an app that delivers shopping rewards for just walking into a store. The app, provided by Shopkick, detects a signal within the store to deliver "kickbucks" that can be redeemed for in-store gift card rewards or discounts. It's just one more way that conventional stores are fighting back with online sites that provide easy shopping and often free shipping. Other retailers using this rewards app are American Eagle Outfitters, Sporters Authority and Macy's, to name a few.

The Shopkick app is free on iPhone and can be downloaded at www.itunes.com/appstore/.
