After seven years at the Cooper Design Space, Jason Bates decided to make a change, moving his Derelicte Showroom to the newly renovated Area4 section of the California Market Center.

Bates will bow his new, nearly 5,000-square-foot space on Oct. 15 at Los Angeles Fashion Market.

“We were in the Cooper building for seven years,” Bates said. “When we were approached for the new Area4, we thought it was a good opportunity to make a change.” Bates said he liked the CMC’s amenities, including the ample parking and the selection of restaurants. “Change is good,” Bates said. (Indeed, this has been a year of change for Bates, who opened a Derelicte showroom in New York in January.)

The new Derelicte Showroom at the CMC features a clean, gallery-like setting that will provide a backdrop for the clothing, which will provide the pop of color, Bates said. “We want each brand to have an energy and space of its own,” he said.

Derelicte carries a mix of international men’s lines that range from retro-cool contemporary to skate-inspired street. Cold Method is a Dutch menswear collection of somber pieces with sophisticated European styling. WeSC (“We Are the Superlative Conspiracy”) is a Swedish collection inspired by skate and streetwear. Farah is a nearly 100-year-old brand that became a cult favorite in the 1970s. The British brand, which is a division of Perry Ellis Europe, uses its history as a springboard for its contemporary cool pieces. Derelicte also carries two Australian collections: Cheddar Pocket accessories and denim line Neuw. Bates recently set up a distribution company for Neuw and Farah, the two newest collections in the showroom, which also sub-leases space to British hat label Christys’ & Co.

“And we’re looking to pick up a couple of new lines,” Bates said.

The showroom's collections carry contemporary prices. For example, wholesale prices range from $12 to $35 for T-shirts and $50 to $90 for denim.

The CMC showroom will also be the headquarters for the Class trade show, the biannual contemporary streetwear trade show founded by Bates in 2008.—Alison A. Nieder
