L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2011: Kucoon

Designer Andrea Spratt showed her maturity this season by designing a collection made for the average woman. But that doesn’t mean that it is boring or average, by any means. Spratt, who has a costuming background, applied her edgy sculpted aesthetic to easy, wearable pieces. To create the collection, she took apart simple designs and put them back together. Pieces were deconstructed and made with simple design elements such as ruffles, seaming details and hoods for an element of mystery.

Spratt said she is starting to be a lot more realistic about her designs. This season she tried the collection on several body types and eliminated pieces that didn’t work. “There was a lot of experimentation this time around, and I asked friends to come in and give me feedback,” Spratt explained. “I want clients to be happy, whereas before it was more about my creativity and what I wanted to do. Now it’s much more focused on the everyday woman.”

Spratt’s designs in light jersey, terry, cotton, fleece and lace were made with flexibility in mind. She included strapless jumpsuits, high-waist pants to elongate the waist, and long skirts and dresses, a new trend that is emerging. She also showed skin with crop tops, uber short shorts and cutouts on items such as an overall romper.—N. Jayne Seward
