L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2011: Jen Awad

“Dolls After Dark” was the theme for Jen Awad’s Spring 2011 collection, which debuted on Oct. 17 at Concept Fashion Week in downtown Los Angeles.“I think, for me, this collection was very nostalgic,” said the designer, who applied the childhood activities of dressing up and playing with dolls to dressing as an adult. “I think there is part of us that doesn’t want to lose that childish concept in wanting to be playful in the way that we dress,” she explained.

The collection included feminine dresses decorated with bows, bra tops paired with shorts and vintage-inspired swimwear. It was a mix of confections as shades of lavender merged with purple, turquoise and khaki. Awad expanded on her use of chiffon and utilized silk and a shimmery metallic fabric she found in Peru.

The collection was playful and a bit extravagant, but that’s exactly what the designer was hoping to achieve. “I feel like we’re in a time where everything has to be so serious and so grungy or edgy, and I’m over it,” Awad explained. “I want women to feel like they can still enjoy what they’re wearing.”—N.
