L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2011: Valerj Pobega

Valerj Pobega’s designs have been recognized by Gen Art and are carried in top boutiques such as Church and TenOverSix. This season, the designer presented her collection as an installation during Concept Fashion Week in downtown Los Angeles. It was the perfect way to view the collection, which Pobega calls custom “works of art.”

For Spring, the designer created bespoke pieces inspired by the song “Teardrop,” by Massive Attack. “Dark flowers blossom”—a key line from the song—was a key point of inspiration. Lyrics to the song hung on the wall next to models who wore garments that illustrated the darkly romantic theme. Pobega translated the idea into her typically dark, grungy but avant-garde aesthetic.

The collection was crafted in a variety of silk fabrics that were hand-painted. A silk taffeta top resembled a rose, and the painted streaks on a dress mimicked the colorful streaks of a lily. One of the most detailed frocks had a corset effect created with multiple layers of paint and crinkle chiffon.—N. Jayne Seward
