Sophomore Plays Truth or Dare
Films aren't just for the big screen. Today, they're in fashion. During L.A. Fashion Week, New York-based fashion label Sophomore presented its Spring/Summer 2011 collection via a short video. Titled "Truth or Dare," the short debuted at Paul and Andre's in Hollywood in collaboration with Kanon Organic Vodka. Frankie Rayder, Samaire Armstrong, Nicky Hilton, Roxy Olin, Leo Fitzpatrick and Aaron Bondaroff all turned out for the screening and party.
Sophomore has become known for it’s creative documentary style lookbooks and videos. Owner and designer Chrissie Miller and photographer Cass Bird collaborate each season to showcase the collection in relaxed and many times unpredictable situations. The idea stems from Miller’s interest in film making which she studied in college. “I was may more interested in film and the [clothing] we do is really basic so I got more into photography and film,” she explained. Last year’s video was shot on Coney Island. “It’s on our website and that got a lot of attention,” she said.
This season’s film was inspired by Madonna’s original documentary. Miller enlisted the help of her friends - actress Chloe Sevigny, style icon Jen Brill, tattoo/artist Scott Campbell and actress Drea De Mateo - to star in the film wearing Sophomore’s Spring collection. The plot included a relaxed evening of hanging out at the Bowery Hotel, which unfolded in a comfortable, yet slightly awkward ’truth or dare’ fashion. “We would guide them and come up with [questions such as], ’What’s your biggest fear?’ We had basic questions and sort of let them go,” explained Miller. Three hours of footage were narrowed down to five minutes of story telling, tattooing, surprise guests, and even (gasp) a girl-kiss.
