Sachika Spring 2012
The Sachika sisters found inspiration in mermaids—their childhood fascination—to create their Spring 2012 collection. The identical twins, To-Nya and To-Tam Sachika, divide their time between New York and Los Angeles and created a collection full of cocktail dresses, tailored ready-to-wear and evening gowns that suited both locales.
Their show, titled “Mermaid Paradise: Dance With the Ocean,” incorporated the blues, greens and coral colors of the sea with earth tones in sand, stone, ivory and beige—to illustrate the island theme. “We’ve always been fascinated by ’The Little Mermaid’ and have had a fascination with anything to do with water and under the sea,” To-Nya Sachika explained. “The mermaid is also very, very feminine, and we want to celebrate the feminine body,” she added.
Pieces such as color-blocked cocktail dresses added contrasting design lines to define the body, cinch in the waist and enhance the feminine form. Styles ranged from fitted cocktail dresses to breezy printed tops and pants and gowns such as a red number with a clinging mermaid shape.
Cotton, satin, silk chiffon, power mesh and ponte were key fabrications. The event gave the design duo an opportunity to present their vision, including the sensual dance performance that opened the show. “It’s really about delivering a show so that people understand the vision that we have,” To-Tam Sachika explained. “For us it’s about having a vision, creating a dream, creating a world. It’s all art for us—fashion, movement. So we take pleasure in organizing a production where people can get immersed in our world,” she said.”—N. Jayne Seward
