Chinese Laundry Dives Into Denim for Fall

Chinese Laundry has taken the plunge into denim, launching a new collection of denim dresses, skirts, jeans and jackets for fall.

Known for its affordable footwear, this is the label’s first foray into clothing, which was showcased at Eden in Hollywood on April 3.

“The market needs newness and freshness, and these people are doing some very creative things,” said Chief Executive Officer of Chinese Laundry Bob Goldman, speaking about the denim designers. “They have figured out a new way of doing denim. For the price of denim, we can emulate leather.”

The collection included pleatherized denim trench coats and dresses, pleated denim dresses and fitted denim skirts, jeans, mini-dresses and jumpsuits. Colors included fire-engine red, caramel brown, black, turquoise and denim blue.

“It’s for the woman that wants a good fit and a good pair of jeans, but doesn’t want to pay premium price,” Dennis Griffis, vice president and managing director of Chinese Laundry Denim, said.

The merchandise is expected to be in stores in June, with prices ranging from $79 to $89 for jeans and $150 to $300 for premium items.

90210’s Shenae Grimes, Miss Teen USA Danielle Doty, and Miss Universe Leila Lopes were all on hand to take in the show.

“Chinese Laundry is our shoe sponsor and Miss USA [Alyssa Campanella] was actually walking in the show, so hopefully soon we’ll be wearing their denim line,” Doty said.
