Galleria Renovation Starts

The Glendale Galleria in Glendale, Calif., started the most extensive renovation project in its more than 36-year history on April 25.

Renovation crews started the project with construction on the mall’s entrance on Central Avenue and its Target Court. New stone and tile flooring is being installed there, said Larry Martin, the senior general manager of Glendale Galleria. The next step for the renovation will be installing a new chandelier at the JC Penney Court. A new elevator will be installed in the court along with new handrails.

Along with the extensive cosmetic renovation, the Galleria will build a new open-air, outdoor dining area in its CentralAvenue Plaza. One of the leading features of the renovation will be the construction of a Bloomingdale’s department store in the former space of the Galleria’s Mervyns. The 120,000-square-foot Bloomingdale’s is expected to open in 2013. The renovation is scheduled to be wrapped up in Fall 2013. The mall is owned and run by General Growth Properties Inc., headquartered in Chicago.

“When all is complete, our customers will enjoy a more modern ambiance and enhanced shopping experience,” Martin said.Construction will take place duringnights and early mornings in order to not interfere with shopping.

The Galleria’s new look will also feature new family restrooms and improved signage, which will create a more “unified” feel for the mall, Martin said.—Andrew Asch
