Sue Wong

For her Fall 2012 presentation, Sue Wong hosted a champagne lunch and presentation at her Los Angeles atelier. “This is my place of business. This is where I thrive. This is where I do all my creative work,” Wong said. “I really like to invite people into my inner sanctum.” Hosting the event at her atelier gave people a look into her world and the opportunity to view the nearly 300-piece collection.

While 40 pieces were presented on models and mannequins, a full rack was available for guests to view up close. The collection was made with Wong’s signature hand-made details. Intricate beading and sequins took the shape of strapless column dresses and elaborate gowns. Beaded cocktail dresses trimmed with feathers were flirty and matching jacket and dress sets made with soutache lace sophisticated.

Dubbing herself the “every woman’s couturier” Wong brings eveningwear to women at affordable prices. “I’m very much appreciated for it,” Wong said. “You don’t have to pay $30,000 for a couture gown; you can pay anywhere from $400 to $800 for a Sue Wong.” For Fall 12, Wong’s collection, titled “Autumn Sonata,” was inspired by the Fall season and how it corresponds to the seasons of life. “I’ve always been very intrigued and interested on a philosophical level how the passing of the seasons correlate and correspond with the major passages and seasons in our human existence,” she said.

Wong borrowed the palette from nature, utilizing the colors of beautiful, rich gemstones such as rose quartz, rubies and garnets as well as the shades of minerals and tones of the earth. “Nature is a beautiful artist herself,” she explained. “[Nature] paints this beautiful canvas of all these rich colors and everything that she touches whether it’s the colors of the trees or the clouds or the sunset. I think it’s a very profound and beautiful season.” .—N. Jayne Seward
