OBITUARIES

Manhattan Beachwear’s Alan Schwartz, 67

Swimwear veteran Alan Schwartz died on June 8 following a battle with cancer. He was 67.

The executive vice president of Manhattan Beachwear, Schwartz had been with the Cypress, Calif.–based company for 26 years, helping to grow it into a swimwear-manufacturing giant with a portfolio of brands that includes La Blanca, 2 Bamboo, The Bikini Lab, 24th & Ocean and Maxine of Hollywood, as well as licensed swim brands Ralph Lauren, Lauren Ralph Lauren, ABS, Adidas, Trina Turk, Hobie, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Kenneth Cole New York, Sperry Top-Sider and Nanette Lepore Swim.

Born in Virginia, Schwartz grew up in Miami Beach, Fla., where he got his start in the apparel industry, manufacturing velvet bomber jackets, before joining sportswear maker Bobby Brooks as a salesman. A meeting with Allan Colvin in 1987 led Schwartz to leave Bobby Brooks to join Colvin’s newly launched swim company, Manhattan Beachwear.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; brother Murray; sons Jason and Kyle; daughter-in-law Kim; and granddaughter Scarlett.

The family suggests donations be made in Schwartz’s name, in lieu of flowers, to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Liver Transplant Fund. For more information on donations, contact Carrie Seifert at cseifert@mbwswim.com.
