Tanner Goods Opens Doors Near Ace Hotel in Downtown LA

The recent opening of the trendy Ace Hotel near the LA Fashion District has lured yet another hip retailer to the neighborhood.

Tanner Goods, which is really a leather goods store with a men's clothing store inside called The Woodlands, threw open its doors this week and was immediately well received.

On a recent afternoon, several customers were perusing the handmade leather belts, wallets, gloves, bracelets, bags and other goods inside the store at 860 S. Broadway. The compact space that occupies about 950 square feet has a retro feel to it with concrete floors and a jukebox off to the side filled with 45s to play shoppers' requests. Designer Casey Keasler out of Oregon had a helping hand in the interior design.

The store's manager, Alex Toyoshima, recently moved down from Portland, Ore., where Tanner Goods is headquartered, to take charge of the place that is open every day of the week.

This is the company's first flagship store outside of Oregon. Toyoshima said Tanner Goods decided to venture to downtown LA because of the up-and-coming nature of the area. "We also have a good relation with the Ace Hotel (also headquartered in Portland) and they clued us in to what is going on down here and we wanted to be part of the neighborhood."

Everything in the store has a craftsman-like quality to it. All the clothing labels are made in the U.S. and close to the source. As far as the belts and other leather goods are concerned, you can just see the artisans pounding out the leather and shaping it.

Tanner Goods is across the street from another retail newcomer, Acne Studios.
