Which Stores Will Open on Thanksgiving Day?

Until recently it was almost sacrilegious to open on Thanksgiving Day unless you were a grocery store that acted as a last-minute stop for housebound chefs preparing that big turkey dinner.

But those days are over. In recent years, major department stores and retail chains are opening their doors more than ever. Macy's, known for its Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan, just announced it will be open at 6 p.m. on Turkey Day. So if you're in New York, you can attend the parade and then stand in line at the store.

All sorts of Black Friday deals start on Thanksgiving, with Macy's touting the fact that women's wool and down coats will be 60 percent off - not that we need them in Southern California. There will also be bargains on cashmere sweaters.

Macy's has gradually increased its Thanksgiving Day hours. Last year it opened at 6 p.m. also, but the year before, in 2013, it didn't open until 8 p.m. In 2012, it opened at midnight.

Kmart traditionally opens at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, so you can buy all the dishes and tablecloths you need if you weren't prepared for Thanksgiving, and Walmart has been known for opening at 6 p.m.

Sears has announced that the doors fly open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and stay open until 2 a.m.
