Printing a Safilo prototype on a Stratasys J750 3D printer

Italian eyewear maker Safilo—which manufacturers prescription frames and sunglasses for brands such as Dior, Hugo Boss, Max Mara and Jimmy Choo—has begun 3D printing its prototypes using a 3D printer from Stratasys.

The eyewear company recently released a video showcasing how the Stratasys J750 full color, multi-material 3D printer has reduced prototyping time by 60 percent. In the past, prototypes were sculpted and carved by hand, a process that took about 15 hours, according to the video. The 3D printer takes that process down to three hours. The Stratasys J750 also allows the company to create several prototypes at once and the video takes viewers through the process from Photoshop to CAD to the final 3D printed frame.
