Heidi Merrick Opening Store in DTLA

The area around Ninth Street and Broadway, a block away from the California Market Center, is becoming the hot spot for high-end retail.

The latest company to join the wave of pricey stores in the area is Heidi Merrick, headed by designer Heidi Merrick, known for her California minimalist designs that have refined silhouettes and have a contemporary price point.

The new place at 113-115 W. Ninth St., a few doors away from French retailer A.C.P., is under construction and is expected to open in early November.

With her design studio around the corner at 850 S. Broadway, Merrick doesn't have far to go to keep an eye on what's happening at the new spot that used to be occupied by a video-game store.

This is Merrick's first foray into the world of bricks-and-mortar retail after starting her line in 2006. But she knows a thing or two about retail. Her father, famed surfboard shaper Al Merrick, started Channel Islands Surfboards with his wife, Terry, in 1969. There are now Channel Islands Surfboards outposts in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
