Doneger Group's Trend-spotting 2007

David Wolfe: “The most exciting and challenging movement is from maximalism to minimalism. Simpler silhouettes; bigger, more interesting shapes tailored to make them interesting; less embellishment. We’ve been so oversaturated with color, the money in the bank is on soft neutrals going forward the next few years. And, the way Claire Danes looks in the movie ’Shopgirl’ will influence fashion.”

Pat Tunsky, color and fabric: “When modernism as a trend became saturated, we desperately needed to give customers a change, something softer, prettier, more romantic. There was Bohemian, which evolved into Romantic, and now Victorian, which made for a very pretty runway—and saleable. We’ve seen a lot of Russian inspiration for next Fall, multi-sided in that there is the Imperialist Russian of the czar with beautifully opulent clothings, but also the Russian military officer look with double-breasted uniform jackets, and the Cossack looking babushka prints on peasant blouses worn with vests. We’re also seeing strong movement into what I’ve termed ’Scottish Highlands,’ beautiful mid-size plaids, tweeds, and herringbones.”

Janine Blaine, West Coast: “Victorian is the next biggest trend, with vintage elegance. One client asked how he would interpret this for his T-shirt line. I told him to do three-quarter-sleeve tees with a big lace ruffle sleeve. Vendors have to figure out how to interpret it best for their customers.”
