According to urban legend, pit bulls are the dogs that no one messes with. But the legend doesn’t describe Remy Martin, a 75-pound male pit bull, according to his owner, Fabian Chichester. The dog is as sweet tempered as a fawn and reportedly one of the stars of a subculture built around breeding pit bulls.

Chichester debuted a contemporary menswear line, called Blue Sage, which is inspired by his muscular 4-year-old dog and the colorful, international world of pit-bull dog shows. The entrepreneur, who also serves as the line’s designer and partner, opened a 1,500- square-foot showroom last November in the Gerry Building to help display the brand.

Blue Sage’s first season was Spring 2006. Chichester said his line leans toward fitted, contemporary silhouettes. Wholesale price points range from $10 for T-shirts to $100 for jeans. On an irreverent note, graphics of Remy Martin’s face are hidden in the T-shirt designs. The clothes also feature interesting details such as a tiny pocket inside the labels of the jeans and a rising-sun design on polo shirts.

The company could earn more than $500,000 in its first year, according to Chichester. “I want this line to be high-end but also to have street appeal,” he said. —Andrew Asch
