Little Shop of Operas
Halloween, here we come. LA Opera will sell costumes from past productions such as “La Traviata” shown here. Photo by Robert Millard, courtesy of LAOpera.
These days no packrat archivists are immune to scaling back on closet excess in current trim times. Witness, the Los Angeles Opera will sell more than 2,500 items from past productions in its first ever costume shop sale this Saturday, Oct. 10.
Lucky for us, the sale looks like it will be a playground for lovers of the ostentatious, with full “merry peasant” and “medieval courtier” costumes to satiate the most avid Renaissance Faire revelers and Medieval Times regulars. The casual costumer can purchase pieces individually such as waistcoats, doublets, capes, bodices, gowns, hats, fans, gloves, shoes capes, hats, shoes and fans.
It’s not just the clothes worn by the choir in the background (though from the ensemble photos even those are spectacular), handcrafted “diva dresses” that were made for LA Opera’s leading ladies and gentleman from productions such as Romeo Et Juliette, The Merry Widow, Die Meistersinger, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Don Giovanni, La Traviata, Idomeneo, Carmen and The Fly will also will be sold.
