Project Trade Show Architect Sets Up L.A. Shop

Clara Winston and David Winston

Part of the fun of the Project Trade Show is checking out the sleek, science-fiction look of the premium trade show’s furniture. And it looks like Los Angeles is going to get many more chances to get comfortable with futuristic Project furniture such as the Spine Couch, the Floppy coffee table and the huggable, inflatable light called the Super Nova.

The designer of Project’s look, David Winston, set up the headquarters of his architectural agency, Cleanroom Inc., in downtown Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood.

A debut party for Cleanroom’s new digs was produced May 20. The futuristic furniture is housed in a building constructed in 1905, and fortunately some of the building’s rough-hewn, turn-of-the-20th-century grit remain. Winston will use the space to design environments and furniture he created for Project, as well as Volcom’s New York City boutique and the Atrium boutiques, which are owned by Project owner Sam Ben-Avraham.

Also housed in this space is furniture company Scale 1:1, which will focus on selling furniture crafted by Winston and, eventually, other designers. Scale 1:1's executive director is Winston’s wife, Clara Winston. The New York office for Cleanroom also will continue doing business.

Located below the Cleanroom offices is the 20,000-square-foot printing plant for CRA Custom. The company provides banners and printing services for Project among other high-profile clients. And for all of you printing geeks out there, check out CRA’s Turbojet printer. It looks like a typical desktop printer but pumped up to the size of a car. Hope this giant machine works better than the prehistoric printer in the office of California Apparel News.
