René Geneva Design show in Vienna

U.S. embassies are often swank places to get a passport.

But for American eco-designer René Geneva, the U.S. embassy in Vienna was a partner to produce a runway show of her organic-fashion line René Geneva Design.

The Austin, Tex.-based line was the star of what was the first green fashion show produced by an American embassy. Only a handful of fashion shows have been produced by any U.S. embassy. René Geneva Design has also exhibited at a few Mercedes Benz Los Angeles Fashion Weeks.

The solo show, produced Oct. 14 as “Grüne Mode - American Style" at the Marble Room of the Vienna Museum of Ethnology, featured items from Geneva’s Spring and Fall seasons for 2011. The show’s fashions were constructed out of organic wools and hemp silks.

René Geneva was invited to the embassy after an embassy press officer saw her line at a trade show. As proof that some people are just too fabulous, this unidentified press officer reportedly once worked as a model.

A statement from the Vienna embassy said this fashion show was just one cultural effort demonstrating America is a diverse country. “We hope to show through multiple programs, of which this is one, that the U.S. is made of up of many individuals and state governments, as well as the Federal government, who are trying to make this world a cleaner, greener place.”
