West Coast Legend, Photographer Michael Miller

Los Angeles based photographer Michael Miller has shot all the West Coast legendary hip hop acts from the 1980’s to the current, as well as numerous fashion campaigns with iconic figures like Linda Evangelista. From Arabian Prince, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dog to the youthful faces of Cypress Hill and Ice Cube, Miller was behind the lens, capturing musical figures in their prime.

Along with his subjects, Miller was a part of a burgeoning culture, one that combined elements of street life, style and music. Miller undoubtedly caught the Los Angeles’ spirit and fervor during a time known as the golden era of hip hop, leaving behind a trail of memories and imageries blasted on countless album covers. While recognized for his honest portrayal of his subjects, there contains historical context within each photo.

Yesterday, Miller, along with contemporary artist Patrick Martinez, conducted a private screening and Q&A, at the Soho House, Beverly Hills to explore the stories behind his self-published text “West Coast Hip Hop: A History in Pictures.” In an effort to promote his newest project, a documentary exploring the origin of West Coast hip hop, an intimate crowd caught a glimpse of the trailer that included interviews and testimonials by known graffiti artists, rappers and fashion designers, giving expression to how much of an impact West Coast hip hop has had on people and trends around the globe.
