Fukai has dedicated much of her life to the study of fashion and how it fits within a historical paradigm. Her expansive collection of artifacts, including haute couture, pays homage to revered designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. From an academic perspective, Fukai challenges the notions of movement, sequence and silhouettes of design. Her studies include researching the technique of traditional Japanese garments and its natural progression into contemporary wear with the use of technology.
