Spring Breakers Style

Director Harmony Korine, responsible for writing the cult classic Kids, recently released another supposed banger, Spring Breakers.

I haven’t had the chance to visit his latest work but if it’s anything like Kids, I am sure it will be a creative gem.

Kids chronicled a cool sub-culture of youth in New York during the ‘90s. The characters mirrored real life young teens, most of which were skaters, who liked to go to raves and experiment, delving into an adult world when they were much too young.

The film featured Chloe Sevigny, Rosario Dawson, Leo Fitzpatrick and Harold Hunter who dealt with pressing issues, leaving viewers with a poetically sad and thought-chilling haze.

And of course, Sevigny's character, Jenny and Dawson's, Ruby wore clothes that were relatable - cut off shorts, vintage tees, kicks and back packs were all part of the look.

The film Spring Breakers, starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, James Franco and Ashley Benson, is said to be transformative in a similar vein. Korine studies modern day youth and the loss of innocence through a controversial social commentary, pushing boundaries with graphic content.

After reading reviews, however, there seems to be some dark humor peaking in, especially the wardrobe (which is apparent by the trailer).

Costume designer Heidi Bivens who is responsible for producing the body centric pieces visited retailers American Apparel, Hot Topic and Victoria’s Secret to outfit the characters.

As the fashion editor of Purple Magazine and a contributor at Vogue, Bivens went in an opposite direction from her customary editorial choices.

In an article she was quoted as drawing inspiration from shopping malls, Korine’s 'Girls Gone Wild' photo collection and the weekly mugshot newspaper, Busted.

Exaggerative barely there bikinis and extreme pops of pink were a staple look and if you have ever been on a spring break vacation, Bivens’ design approach is pretty accurate.

The retail maven Opening Ceremony just launched the Spring Breakers collection with the help of Bivens, featuring candy coated, neon graphic tees, basketball jerseys with character driven logos, sweatpants and sweatshirts, biknis and even accessorizes, including towels and bandanas.

Although most college students are just about ending their spring break, the Coachella Festival is around the corner and there are other events to be had, where the young can explore their own Spring Breakers style.
