Maggie Barry at Shoppe

After Costuming Katy Perry & Runway Show, Maggie Barry Does A Pop Up

Fresh from her runway shows at Style Fashion Week, Maggie Barry, who has costumed stars ranging from Katy Perry to Van Halen, presided over the March 13 debut of Shoppe, the monthly pop-up shop at her new atelier in downtown Los Angeles.

“We’re doing random acts of fashion here,” Barry joked, but she also was telling some truth about the 2,000-square-foot space at 107 E. 8th St, which is located next to a pizzeria and across the street from a Mexican restaurant. She quietly opened the atelier in January.

Barry uses the space to make designs for her lines Shoppe, Maggie Barry and M8 Urban. The space also is where she makes costumes for music superstars Katy Perry, Niki Minaj and Fifth Harmony. What she makes there, she sells. A mini-skirt made out of ties from the Maggie Barry line? A corset from a Katy Perry video? They’re available. There are even fantasy accessories for the costumes. Interested in a set of lobster claw gloves? It was sold on March 13.

She’ll also be using the monthly pop-ups to showcase artists, such as photographer Richard M. Smith. At the March 13 pop-up, he displayed his cinema verité portraits which give a poignant, but gritty look at people at Los Angeles’ metro stations.

The monthly pop-up at Shoppe will take place during every Downtown LA Art Walk, which is the second Thursday of every month. The pop up will be more than another task to pile on to Barry’s already crowded schedule. “We needed a space to slow down and party,” she confided.
