L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: The Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show
The Green Initiative Humanitarian show should have been called “Where the Wild Things Are.”
In addition to the models walking the runway in the five-designer show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., the show featured a wolf, an albino python and Rowdy the Capuchin monkey, as well as Polynesian dancers, African drummers and hip-hop dancers, all of whom entertained the crowd of more than 500.
New designer Emily Factor, the little sister of Smashbox owners Dean and Davis Factor, made her first Los Angeles Fashion Week appearance, with six looks inspired by the ocean. The recent graduate of London’s Central St. Martins College of Art & Design showed blue- and green-colored garments constructed out of recycled cloth and cut in a classic way that Factor intended to recall Grecian sculpture. Los Angeles–based company M The Movement showed 10 streetwear looks featuring ties, polo-style shirts and jeans constructed from cloth made out of soybean, bamboo and charcoal. Los Angeles–based Ecoskin showed bamboo-blend basics with stylish details such as ruffles and pleating. A standout gown had asymmetric shoulder cuts. Atlanta-based Smart Glass Jewelry showed glass-ring dresses made from the company’s necklaces and rings. British Columbia–based Lilikoi Clothing showed hand-printed dresses made out of bamboo and organic cotton. —Andrew Asch
