In other Nike-related news, a report by the Baltimore-based Global Alliance for Workers and Communities that was commissioned by the Beaverton, Ore.-based shoe giant found that workers who make the company’s products under contract at nine Indonesian factories have been subjected to verbal and physical abuse, including sexual abuse, by their managers; Global Alliance, a nonprofit organization monitoring conditions for the workers—mostly female—in Asian apparel and other factories, was formed in 1999 by the World Bank, Nike Inc., San Francisco-based Gap Inc., St. John’s University, Penn State University and others; a Nike spokesperson said the company would implement a detailed plan to remedy the situation at the factories, that Nike would issue quarterly reports on the Indonesian situation and that Global Alliance would return to the factories for follow-up interviews.
