Bendel Returns to Scout for L.A. Designers

New York-based Henri Bendel will hold its second “open see” event in which the upscale women’s apparel retailer scouts for West Coast design talent. The “open see” will be held on May 21 at the W Los Angeles Hotel in Westwood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is “first come, first see,” according to Teril Turner, director of marketing for the retailer, who advised that designers bring “an edited collection of samples.” Turner said samples were required but recommends designers bring look books, photos, press clippings and line lists.

The designers will have a chance to meet with buyers for their category, who will stay until they have seen all the designers who arrive before 3 p.m., Turner said.

“We don’t turn away anyone because you never know when you’re going to find that great new collection,” she added.

Henri Bendel regularly hosts its “open see” in New York, but began holding a West Coast version of the event last August.

“We were really impressed with the level of designers who turned out,” said Turner. “We picked up about a dozen people from that and we’re back for more.”

Turner said the retailer is looking for women’s apparel designers in categories including ready-to-wear, sportswear, sweaters, coats, dresses, handbags, jewelry, hair accessories, hats and scarves. The retailer is also looking for new home collections and gift lines.
