Ina Celaya

Fashiongoers at Ina Celaya’s Spring 2002 fashion show and collective, held Nov. 5 at the Hotel El Dorado in downtown Los Angeles, experienced the ethereal creation of humanity, earth and the universe.

“It’s sort of a daily part of life,” Celaya said. “You can get real deep with it if you wanted to.”

Pure and clean, Celaya’s collection relies heavily on surreal visuals by the method in which the designer patterned her conceptual collection from traditional costumes in Eastern Europe and Ethiopia. A group of models draped in satin and sheer preceded a group wearing blue powder puff dresses with cotton trimmings. Some pieces seemed off-balance, although no one could deny that the designer’s work was innovative. A group of Celaya’s hand-sculpted dresses with intergalactic images were also showcased.

The show also included a retrospective of sorts, with a reprisal of the designer’s four previous avant-garde collections: Black Rainbows, Cubist Period, Sperm Polka Dots and Voyeurism. —Claudia Figueroa
