Seven TJX Cos. Employees Included Among Fatalities

Passengers on American Airlines Flight 11, one of the two that struck New York’s World Trade Center on Sept. 11, killing all aboard, included seven employees of the TJX Cos. Inc., the operator of T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s, who were headed to California for a new T.J. Maxx store opening, according to a press release issued by TJX Cos. on Sept. 12.

All of the employees were women, ages 27 to 44, whose tenures at the Framingham, Mass.-based company ranged from five to 17 years. Most of them were merchandise-planning managers and buyers. One was a senior store-equipment specialist.

The Boeing 767 plane the women were on took off from Boston’s Logan International Airport bound for Los Angeles International Airport. It carried a total of 81 passengers and 11 crew members. It flew into the north tower of the Manhattan landmark around 8:30 a.m.

In its press release, TJX Cos. released the names of six of the seven employees: Neilie Casey, Tara Creamer, Robin Kaplan, Christine Barbuto, Linda George and Lisa Fenn Gordenstein. Out of respect for the families, the release didn’t mention where the victims had lived and didn’t mention the name of one employee.

“It is impossible to adequately describe the sense of loss and sadness we all feel over the loss of our friends,” said Ted English, TJX Cos.’ president and chief executive officer in a prepared statement. “Our hearts and our prayers and our support are with the families of our fallen colleagues.” —Nola Sarkisian-Miller
